Roommates - 8/31/2024:
The first two years of college I lived in the dorms. Now they were the pretty basic dorms which were just a single room with one roommate. I went random both times, and the roommates i got were fine. But after last year with my roommate who spent 8 hours a day in our room facetiming his girlfriend, I knew it was time for my dream to come to fruition. A place of my own. Not no roommates, just a room, and a single small space all to my own. Since my little brother moved into my room, when moved out of his crib, I have never had my own room. When we moved houses a few years later my sisters got their own rooms. My parents once let me have a little place in the basement, that lasted for a month or two before my Dad turned it into his workout area. And there were places I would sit around, so often they became my own space pretty much, but the problem with that was privacy. I didn't have a place I could go and be unbothered. And then in college I get this roommate who says that they'll ask before they bring anyone physically into the room, but just facetimes from a place in the room where the whole room is visible. And there is NO WAY I am going to voice my complants. So this year I get a room in an apartment off campus (barely off campus). I have three roommates, but I don't care, I have my own room, and my own bathroom. I didn't plan on using the shared common space, but now I have a dozen eggs that need to be cooked before the 15th (and other food that needs to be cooked). I move in and the place is a mess. Nothing horrendous, but if it was this messy after three weeks from only two of the four college age boys, then... And the fridge it was a mess (still is). Let's just say I wanted to store as many things in my room as possible. Now to cook with these things and bring them back into my room after is a task in itself, and with the added slowness of an induction burner, cooking eggs and eating eggs takes like an hour and a half. And with the fact I am afraid of anyone else being there while I prepare food (not that I'm doing something wrong or something) it results in me avoiding cooking at all costs. But now I'm all out of bread for sandwiches, and the restaurants and dining halls are closed, I can't starve myself, so I guess I'll make a frozen pizza.
Hacking a DSI - 8/31/2024:
I do not recommend hacking a DSI. If you have ever stepped foot into the videogame community on YouTube that isn't specifically obsessed with the newest stuff, and the newest consoles you will see videos on why you should hack your PSVita, your 3DS, or your Wii and such. One console you will not see as much is the DS. Now I am not talking about getting a R4 card, or something, I am talking about hacking the literal software of the system (That is why I specify it was my DSI, because I don't know if this is possibly on an original DS). A few years ago I installed a piece of software on my DSI called Twilight Menu, because I wanted to play some SNES RPGs on the go, and this was before Apple let emualtors onto the IPhone's app store. Turns out the only real things it could reliably load were GBA and DS games. All SNES games had an issue where the different layers of sprites would be in the wrong order, all NES games had the issue of tapping a button for a split second would send you rocketing through text and menus, and most GB and GBC games wouldn't load. And now when I want to play my DS I have to go around all this software. Maybe there are better solutions out there than Twilight Menu, all I know is that I am to scared to try and remove it, because I don't want to completly brick my DS.
The Sound of Music - 8/31/2024:
The first film I can every remember being my favorite was the Sound of Music. It was one of the films my Grandmother introduced me to, along with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and the Muppet Movie, that of which I can remember. I don't remember why I liked it, I don't even know if I had seen the movie in full (the movie is nearly 3 hours, which is pretty long for a 5-8 year old, which I think is the age I was when it was my favorite). It's a musical and I remember an event that happened a few years after it had became my favorite film. At that time we had started to sing the songs in music class. I was pulled out of class. I did not like to be pulled out of class for anything. The person who had pulled me out tried to ease my mood by commenting that there was no way I enjoyed those songs, and I had to hide that the film they were from was my favorite or had been my favorite movie of all time. Presumably around 2010 or so I was gifted a copy of the film on Blu-Ray. I must have watched the copy a few times, due to the wear on the packaging, but after a while the film just sat in the DVD bin. My Grandparents were consequential in this love. I found a little writing piece I had to write in early elementary school recently where I wrote about how after school my Grandpa was going to burn me a CD of the songs from the movie. The Sound of Music is a very well known film. Most people know the songs, 'Do-Re-Mi,' 'My Favorite Things,' and 'Sixteen, Going on Seventeen.' There are sing-a-longs, tons of trips to the city it was filmed, Salzburg, every year, and the stage production the film was based on is performed all the time. I recently was going through the DVD bin been as I have gotten into buying DVDs and Blu-Rays a bit. I took the film thinking I should watch it again. I finally got around to watching it last week, and it was so good. I don't know if I really understood what was happening when I was a child but I still believe the film is fantastic. I had a smile on my face the whole time. And the special features that are including on the copy are numerous. The Blu-Ray is packed with countless things that put any of my Criterions to shame. I spent 5 or so hours looking through them, I didn't even crack the surface. Before watching the documentaries I will say I had a short sight on how massive this film was, and how maybe my love for this film as a child wasn't that unique, but still this film meant so much to me then, and it still means a lot to me now.
College Football - 8/31/2024:
I've never really been into too many sports. When I decided to go to the college I did I was repeatedly told of how passionate the fans were of the college football team. My mom who had cousins who lived in the area and went to the school told of the time she went to one of their weddings where after the wedding everybody changed into the school colors for the reception. When people asked me the line of football questions that they would end up asking when they found out what school I was going to I would respond with, "Well since I decided to go there, I guess I'll just have to get into football." My freshman year I got a student season tickets and went to most of the games, and stayed until I couldn't take the crowds of people anymore, or the cold when it got to the later games. The next year I did not get season tickets, which became a problem when my family came to town, and the only way to get a single ticket was to haggle with a season ticket holder on facebook. Now it is a new year, and a new football season. I stayed up until nearly 5 a.m. last night working on my site, and so when I woke up I thought it would be like 3 or 4 p.m. It was actually about 12:30 p.m. I was about to go to the dining hall for lunch, when the constant football chants outside my window made me wonder when the game was. Seeing that the game was in under 2-ish hours, I realized that by the time I went to the dining hall it would probably be closed, because on gamedays the whole city is closed. (Obviously the dining halls can't be completly closed, they just have shorter hours.) After being at this college for two years I have became disillusioned with the way the student body and alumni hold up this school's team, tons of other schools have ridculously dedicated fans. I've found it harder to explain it to other college age students who have just as crazy of a football culture, but also have a team that does good, and then I'm trapped in a conversation about football.
